I put liquid glass in my 1996 Ford Explorer radiator. Do I need to flush it after a certain period ? I was told it had a small leak in a gasket and liquid glass would seal the leak. But do I flush the radiator and fill with antifreeze or do I keep running with the liquid glass and water? When do I put antifreeze in it with cooler weather approaching?

JFG replied: "liquid glass? that's a carnuba (WAX) base, its only going to gunk up your cooling system. flush it, and repair the leak. you are risking doing more damage to your vehicle."

john m replied: "the bottle that you purchase should have directions on how to use it...but id rather replace the gasket...when using such things as the radiator fix or your liquid glass..it tends to plug up the fins in the radiator and also the waterpump..."

cmrwash replied: "First, to JFG; wrong, it is not a wax. liquid glass is sodium silicate, not wax. It sets up hard and can resist temps as high as 1200 f. Many a Ford diesel truck owner has had to use Liquid glass on there engine because of porosity in the block. Now to answer the question: Can't say all brands but generally you will drain the system after allowing the engine to cool down after 20-60mins of running. let stand for at least 3 hours(24 is better) before refilling with fresh coolant. It works and is perfectly safe for your explorer. Liquid glass has many other uses, including preserving eggs for up to a year without refrigeration. Sand core castings etc. Newest one is disable the cars turned in for "Cash for Clunkers". They drain the oil and put in water and liquid glass. It glues the engine up tight, and nothing dissolves the liquid glass."

Ethan replied: "Liquid glass is what the dealers are putting into the motors of the trade in for cash for clunkers.Seizes up the motors, rendering them useless.Your cooling jackets are ***** basically turns into ceramic."

How do I flush a radiator on a 2000 Ford Focus? I kind of know how but I want to make sure. What mixture do I put back in? I see straight anti-freeze and I see a 50/50 mix when I go to the store. What will be the best?

i cant feel my face replied: "aren't they the same? but dunno ask them when u go to buy it."

Sylar replied: "The coolant drain plug is located on the bottom driver's side of the radiator. It has a plastic hex nut to turn to drain it and there's a "nipple" where the coolant comes out. You can attach a 3/8" plastic hose/ tubing (I think that's the size I used, can't remember) to the nipple leading to a bucket before you drain the coolant so that the coolant doesn't leak all over the floor. Once you've drained the coolant, get something like Prestone Super Radiator Cleaner or a similar product designed to flush coolant systems and follow the instructions on the bottle to properly flush the system. Drain the system when this step is complete. Finally, when re-filling the coolant you can either buy pre-mixed antifreeze (where it's already mixed in proper proportion to water) or you can buy 100% antifreeze that you must mix yourself. The pre-mixed antifreeze can be poured right into the system to capacity. DON'T add water to the pre-mixed antifreeze. If you're buying the 100% antifreeze (not pre-mixed) it must be mixed with distilled water (not tap water) at the ratio listed on the bottle to give you protection below the lowest possible temperature it will reach in your area. (Varying mixtures of antifreeze/water give varying amounts of freeze protection). The water in the antifreeze/water coolant mixture is what helps to dissipate heat from the engine during operation, so if you run the car on 100% antifreeze there's a fair chance it will overheat (or at least run hotter than in normally would)."

Whats the best way to flush the radiator in old 79 ford van? I had a hose bust the other day and look like some gunk where it went back on.

richard m replied: "just water and air (compressor),make something or get a flush kit"

Tee replied: "More than likely it is more than the radiator, it is the whole cooling system that needs to be cleaned out. Two choices, 1) Get a Prestone Radiator Flushing Kit and circulate the cleaner as instructed from the instructions or 2) Take it to a Radiator Shop and have them clean it out."

cexsiman replied: "if its just a radiator, i say undo the bottom hose and let all the fluid drain out, then take a hose and feed water into the engine to flush the remaining coolant out and around the cooling system and out through the radiator. replace the bottom hose and refill the cooling system."

Sunflower replied: "There is a valve at the bottom of the radiator, with it open and a hose in the top opening run water through for at least 15 or 20 min with the motor running. There is also some stuff you can by at the auto parts store to better flush the system ask the counter person about it and follow instructions and make sure to refill with fresh anti freeze. Also this would be a very good time to replace the thermostat. Its not expensive and easy to do and should be done 2 to 3 times in a vehicles life. There are two hoses that come from the radiator, follow the top one to the motor, where it connects is the thermostat housing, be sure to get a new gasket for the thermostat too."

how do i flush the radiator on a 1995 ford windstar? where is screw under the car that flushes the radiator for the 1995 ford windstar

Dave A replied: "there should be a petcock at the bottom of the radiator. you will need an adjustable open end wrench to turn the petcock counter-clockwise to open it. if you can't find the petcock you can remove the lower radiator hose but that is extremely messy! flushing the radiator is usually done by purchasing a flush kit from a parts store. basically you drain a bit of the coolant from the radiator and add the flush agent. then run the engine for however long they tell you to run it, let the engine cool then drain all of the coolant and water out of the radiator . you may need to add a neutralizing agent and water after the flush and run the engine again to neutralize the flush agent. then drain it and refill with a 50/50 mix of coolant and water. hope that anwsers your question."
